‘Through a close analysis of the presentation of at least two of the plays male characters, show how Goldsmith presents attitudes towards women in the play’ Oliver Goldsmith has cleverly composed an exceptionally successful comedic play, belonging to the Pastoral Genre, comprising of many key themes and ideas including that of the attitudes of males toward females, the social divide between the lower and upper class and the idea of progress and tradition. Through the numerous linguistic and dramatic devices including dramatic incitement and comedic language, Goldsmith is able to portray the attitudes displayed by the male characters such as Mr Hardcastle, Charles Marlow and George Hastings towards women within the play. Firstly, the fictitious Mr Hardcastle shows varying attitudes towards women in the play. Mr Hardcastle appears to believe that his orders should be followed by the women, as he has power over them once again implying that women are innocent, pure and a reflection of Eve, revealing key elements to the pastoral. Although within the Exposition stage of the play, we see Kate abide by her fathers wishes- ‘in the evening, I put on my house-wife’s dress to pl ease you’, Mr Hardcastle displays an alternative attitude over women, implying he is very respectful and caring. This is shown when he informs Kate- ‘If he be what he has shewn himself, I’m determined he shall never have my consent’, suggesting that although Mr Hardcastle upholds extremely traditional values, he is willing to put them aside to ensure the happiness of his daughter, displaying a more modernised, protective attitude towards women. Goldsmith is able to show attitudes towards women through the character of Charles Marlow. In the Complication stage of the play, Goldsmith introduces ‘Comedy of Manners’, which explores codes of behaviour in sections of upper and middle class to display Marlow’s conflicting attitudes towards women. As we see Kate transform and disguise into a lower class barmaid, the audience are equally surprised to see the change in Marlow’s behaviour and attitude as he goes from being a nervous, ‘bumbling fool’, to an over confident, boastful man, who is certainly not shy around women of a lower class, often treating them with an air of great disrespect, as though they are merely a possession to him- ‘I vow, child, you are vastly handsome’. Marlow appears to have a differing attitude depending on the class in which women belong. As he greets Kate as someone who belongs to the upper class, he is respectful and has a gentlemanly manner, referring to her as ‘Madam’. Through this we see Marlow appear to be very insecure and intimidated, suggesting that he has an enormous sense of inferiority when it comes to upper class women. Despite this, Marlow displays a change in attitude towards the female character of Kate when she disguises herself as a barmaid, suggesting he views women as being merely a possession for men to do what they wish- ‘If you keep me at this distance, how is it possible you and I can ever be acquainted’. Through this characterisation, Goldsmith presents ‘class conflict’, masked with an element of comedy and farce to reveal Marlow’s view upon women. Finally, Goldsmith presents a very traditional view upon women through the characterisation of George Hastings. From the exposition of the play, we learn that Hastings is deeply in love with Miss Constance Neville, whom he is desperate to marry. Hastings appears to be attracted to Constance initially because of her undoubtable beauty and youth, purity and innocence, which are all aspect of pastoral. As Constance informs Hastings that she cannot marry him until she has claimed her jewels, we see that Hastings wants to be the one to provide for her, suggesting a traditional and protective attitude, as he states materialistic goods are not needed- ‘Perish all the baubles! Your person is all I desire’. Goldsmith presents a romantic, optimistic attitude over women and marriage in the view of Hastings. Despite this, we also learn that Hastings views women as something with which he can relieve his teasing and flirtatious nature, which is shown when he is seen complimenting Mrs Hardcastle with sarcasm- ‘extremely elegant and degagee, upon my word, Madam’. With the use of ‘Parody’, Hastings implies that although he upholds traditional values, he views women to be gullible creatures, whom he can mock and tease, although in a light hearted and mischievous, comedic sense. Overall, through the use of dramatic incitement, characterisation and various types of comedy including Parody, Farce and Comedy of Manners, Goldsmith has cleverly presented the typical attitude males had over women at the time in which the play was written. All of the male characters within the play share similar attitudes in the sense that they have power and status over the women within the play, as they are typically viewed as being innocent and pure in a pastoral sense, however in some ways the audience will see that this is beginning to change as women’s roles are evolving. At times women appear to be more powerful than the men within the play, such as how Kate is able to deceive and trick Marlow into believing she was a barmaid. Marx Study In Karl Marx's early writing on "estranged labour" there is a clear and prevailing focus on the plight of the labourer. Marx's writing on estranged labour is and attempt to draw a stark distinction between property owners and workers. In the writing Marx argues that the worker becomes estranged from his labour because he is not the recipient of the product he creates. As a result labour is objectified, that is labour becomes the object of mans existence. As labour is objectified man becomes disillusioned and enslaved. Marx argues that man becomes to be viewed as a commodity worth only the labour he creates and man is further reduced to a subsisting animal void of any capacity of freedom except the will to labour. For Marx this all leads to the emergence of private property, the enemy of the proletariat. In fact Marx's writing on estranged labour is a repudiation of private property- a warning of how private property enslaves the worker. This writing on estranged labour is an obvious point of basis for Marx's Communist Manifesto. The purpose of this paper is to view Marx's concept of alienation (estranged labour) and how it limits freedom. For Marx man's freedom is relinquished or in fact wrested from his true nature once he becomes a labourer. This process is thoroughly explained throughout Estranged Labour. This study will reveal this process and argue it's validity. Appendant to this study on alienation there will be a micro-study which will attempt to ascertain Marx's view of freedom (i.e. positive or negative). The study on alienation in conjunction with the micro-study on Marx's view of freedom will help not only reveal why Marx feels labour limits mans freedom, but it will also identify exactly what kind of freedom is being limited. Estranged Labour Karl Marx identifies estranged labour as labour alien to man. Marx explains the condition of estranged labour as the result of man participating in an institution alien to his nature. It is my interpretation that man is alienated from his labour because he is not the reaper of what he sows. Because he is never the recipient of his efforts the labourer lacks identity with what he creates. For Marx then labour is "alien to the worker...[and]...does not belong to his essential being." Marx identifies two explanations of why mans lack of identity with labour leads him to be estranged from labour. (1) "[The labourer] does not develop freely his physical and mental energy, but instead mortifies his mind." In other words labour fails to nurture mans physical and mental capacities and instead drains them. Because the worker is denied any nurturing in his work no intimacy between the worker and his work develops. Lacking an intimate relation with what he creates man is summarily estranged from his labour. (2) Labour estranges man from himself. Marx argues that the labour the worker produces does not belong to him, but to someone else. Given this condition the labourer belongs to someone else and is therefore enslaved. As a result of being enslaved the worker is reduced to a "subsisting animal", a condition alien to him. As an end result man is estranged from himself and is entirely mortified. Marx points to these to situations as the reason man is essentially estranged from his labour. The incongruency between the world of things the worker creates and the world the worker lives in is the estrangement. Marx argues that the worker first realizes he is estranged from his labour when it is apparent he cannot attain what he appropriates. As a result of this realization the objectification of labour occurs. For the worker the labour becomes an object, something shapeless and unidentifiable. Because labour is objectified, the labourer begins to identify the product of labour as labour. In other words all the worker can identify as a product of his labour, given the condition of what he produces as a shapeless, unidentifiable object, is labour. The worker is then left with only labour as the end product of his efforts. The emerging condition is that he works to create more work. For Marx the monotonous redundancy of this condition is highly detrimental because the worker loses himself in his efforts. He argues that this situation is analogous to a man and his religion. Marx writes, "The more man puts into God the less he retains in himself....The worker puts his life into the object, but now his life no longer belongs to him but to the object." The aspect of empowerment involves inspiring self-esteem and confidence among the subjects to align their feelings to specific intuition or instinct. These elements determine the effects of an organizational behaviour system on subordinate performance in terms of effort and ability (Powell, 2005, p. 19). This requires organizations within the industry to put in place suitable management techniques to ensure effective retention and attraction of employees. Organizations function best when the intra and intercommunication systems are perfect. Therefore, successful organizations manage information continuously. The large scale questionnaire survey for the quantitative phase will help identify which competencie s and feedback styles are most common, while the qualitative phase will help focus on actual management methods used and communication channels in different organizations (De-Rada, 2005, p. 63). Research Approach Use of the qualitative research approach will facilitate understanding of the individual attributes that contribute to poor performance. Attributes of the subjects under study will be qualitatively studied through observation where the researcher will collect data using an observation schedule during the interview process. This will allow the researcher to enter observed qualitative behaviour indicative of lack of motivation in an organization. Quantitative methods used in this study will generally apply to the analysis of the collected data where analytical tools such as chi square, regression and correlation methodologies will be used. These methodologies will help in identification of statistical patterns in the data on motivation collected from organizations using quest ionnaires and interviews (De-Rada, 2005, p. 69). Research Strategy Data, to will be collected through one-on-one interviews, will be scrutinized in detail. Each question asked will be comprehensive to ensure that respondents have an opportunity to give deep and answers that provide an insight into the research problem. Transcription will then be done to each of the recorded interview process. For each response from each participant, the recorded transcripts will be perused to coin relevant and most appropriate response. Factually, instances of divergent or convergent opinions by one or more respondents will be marked appropriately (De-Rada, 2005, p. 66). Validity and reliability determine the accuracy of collecting data in research. In order to achieve validity in the questions presented in the questionnaire, it is essential to carry out question pre-testing (De-Rada, 2005, p. 67). On the other hand, reliability quantifies the magnitude of consistency of research instruments and the outcome created by the same. The way in which an event is experienced is related to the way in which the person, who has experienced this event, can give a different perspective. However, in this qualitative study, the researcher will have the opportunity to get the perspective of the participants. Utilising these experiences as a framework from which to develop the study, the work is likely to reflect the unique understanding that the personal experiences bring to the development of case studies (Persily, 2013, p. 29). The interviews will be conducted by the researcher because of common characteristics of culture and sector. Data used This research will target employee randomly chosen from organizations within the Spanish hotel industry, since they have the knowledge of the feedback attribution and systems management strategies that promote employee motivation. A sample space of 100 participants will be interviewed. The sampling criterion that will be used in the initial sampling plan represents the true picture of the activities on the ground. Adaptation of this sample plan as authentic would not compromise the aspect of comparative study in decision making, that is, it gives room for comparison to another set of data. Methods and techniques used Research survey technique This research will be conducted using research survey study approach. The researcher chose qualitative approach rather than quantitative, because the scope of the research is focused, subjective, dynamic, and discovery oriented. The qualitative approach is best suited to gain proper insight into the situation of the case study. Besides, qualitative data analysis is more detailed than quantitative one. Moreover, this approach will create room for further analysis using different and divergent tools for checking the degree of error and assumption limits. The researcher will use direct interviews with open ended and close ended questionnaires to target respondents (De-Rada, 2005, p. 67). Use of the qualitative research approach will facilitate understanding of the individual attributes of organizational employee motivation effectiveness as influenced by the leaders’ feedback attribution. Attributes of the subjects under study will be qualitatively studied through observation, where the researcher will collect data using an observation schedule during the interview process. These methodologies will help in identification of statistical patterns in the data on motivation collected from organizations using questionnaires and interviews. For interviews, as long as an interviewee agrees to be recorded, the interview will be recorded. This will ensure that all points made by the interviewee are documented and available for consideration in the analysis. Research Plan Week 1: Research Commencement This stage will involve reviewing the research topic and rationale for the proposed hypothesis. This stage may take one week, since choosing the topic will be dependent on ava ilable literature. Week 2 3: Choosing the case study Choosing the case study will be very challenging as research papers adopt different approaches. Specifically, I will have to choose the most convincing research variables from different research articles with a diverse approach to the research questions. Week 4 5: Background research Since materials are available for the research topic, I will have an easy time in merging the relevant material to the research question. This stage may take two weeks to accomplish. Week 6, 7, 8: Conducting the literature review This stage will be very demanding, since different sources of information will be searched. The sources of information that will be probed include the internet, the university library, course notes and public libraries with relevant information on the topic of research. I will concentrate on scholarly papers, conference proceedings, and relevant books. Week 9, 10, 11: Conducting interviews, collecting data and analysing d ata This stage will be the most difficult in the research study. I will have to balance direct interviews, questionnaires, and other methods of research to present information about the topic. Data collected through one-on-one interviews will have to be scrutinised in detail. Open-ended and closed-ended questions will be used. Transcription will be done to each of the recorded interview process. For each response, from each participant, the recorded transcripts will be perused to coin relevant and most appropriate response. This part will be more time consuming than any other part of the research paper. Week 12 13: Research conclusion Emerging themes will be identified and the findings will be interpreted and related to the research question. I will have to manage the data findings and interpretation within the scope of the research topic despite any research dynamics that may arise in the process. Tips on How to Read Chinese To the untrained eye, Chinese characters can seem like a confusing mess of lines. But characters have a logic of their own, revealing clues about definition and pronunciation. Once you learn more about the elements of characters, the logic behind them begins to emerge. Why Are Radicals Important? The building blocks of Chinese characters are radicals. Almost all Chinese characters are composed of at least one radical. Traditionally, Chinese dictionaries were classified by radicals, and many modern dictionaries still use this method for looking up characters. Other classification methods used in dictionaries include phonetics and the number of strokes used for drawing characters. Besides their usefulness for categorizing characters, radicals also provide clues for meaning and pronunciation. This is particularly useful when characters also have a related theme. For example, most characters having to do with water or moisture all share the radical æ ° ´ (shuÇ ). The radical æ ° ´ on its own is also a Chinese character, which translates to water. Some radicals have more than one form. The radical æ ° ´ (shuÇ ), for example, can also be written as æ ° µ when it is used as part of another character. This radical is called ä ¸â€°Ã§â€š ¹Ã¦ ° ´ (sÄ n diÇŽn shuÇ ), which means three drops of water as, indeed, the radical looks like three droplets.  These alternate forms are rarely used independently since they do not stand as Chinese characters on their own.  Therefore, radicals can be a useful tool for remembering the meaning of Chinese characters. Here are a few examples of characters based on the radical æ ° ´ (shuÇ ): æ ° ¾ – fn – overflow; flood æ ±  – zhÄ « – juice; fluid æ ±  – wn – weep; shed tears æ ±â€" – hn – perspiration æ ±Å¸ – jiÄ ng – river Characters can be composed of more than one radical. When multiple radicals are used, one radical is typically used to hint at the definition of the word while the other radical hints at the pronunciation. For example: æ ±â€" – hn – perspiration The radical æ ° ´ (shuÇ ) implies that  Ã¦ ±â€" has something to do with water, which makes sense because perspiration is wet. The sound of the character is provided by the other element. Ã¥ ¹ ² (gn) on its own is the Chinese character for dry. But gn and hn sound very similar. Types of Characters There are six different types of Chinese characters: pictographs, ideographs, composites, phonetic loans, radical phonetic compounds, and borrowings. Pictographs The earliest forms of Chinese writing originate from pictographs. Pictographs are simple diagrams meant to represent objects. Examples of pictographs include: æâ€" ¥ – rà ¬ – sun Ã¥ ± ± – shÄ n – mountain é› ¨ – yÇ” – rain ä º º – rà ©n – person These examples are modern forms of pictographs, which are quite stylized. But the early forms clearly show the objects they represent.   Ideographs Ideographs are characters which represent an idea or concept. Examples of ideographs include ä ¸â‚¬ (yÄ «), ä ºÅ' (à ¨r), ä ¸â€° (sÄ n), which means one, two, three. Other ideographs include ä ¸Å  ( shng) which means  up and ä ¸â€¹ (xi) which means  down. Composites Composites are formed by combining two or more pictographs or ideographs. Their meanings are often implied by the associations of these elements. Some examples of composites include: Ã¥ ¥ ½ – hÇŽo – good. This character combines woman (Ã¥ ¥ ³) with child (Ã¥ ­ ). æ £ ® – sÄ“n – forest. This character combines three trees (æÅ" ¨) to make a forest. Phonetic Loans As Chinese characters evolved over time, some of the original characters were used (or loaned) to represent words that had the same sound but different meanings. As these characters took on a new meaning, new characters representing the original meaning were devised. Here is an example: Ã¥Å'â€" - bÄ›i   This character originally meant â€Å"the back (of the body)† and was pronounced bà ¨i. Over time, this Chinese character has come to mean north. Today, the Chinese word for back (of the body) is now represented by the character èÆ'Å' (bà ¨i) . Radical Phonetic Compounds These are characters which combine phonetic components with semantic components. These represent approximately 80 percent of modern Chinese characters. You have already seen examples of radical phonetic compounds as discussed earlier.   Borrowings The final category – borrowings – is for characters that represent more than one word. These words have the same pronunciation as the borrowed character, but do not have a character of their own. An example of borrowing is è  ¬ (wn) which originally meant â€Å"scorpion†, but came to mean â€Å"ten thousand†, and is also a surname.

One of my duties was to preside over the weekly meeting. I also managed yearly events such as competitions to do with sports, education, and environmental concerns. Furthermore, I was the President of UNICEF at De Anza College. I held charity competitions for basketball and soccer in and around the Bay area. I managed to raise $5,000 and then I donated it to UNICEF. I believe that these experiences, as the president of a big organization, extended my abilities. I was able to overcome the expectations that were placed on me by creating a conducive environment where it was easy to achieve goals.

Comparing the Creatures and Crew in Moby Dick :: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays

Similarities Between Creatures and Crew in Moby Dick      When looking at the cycle of life one sees that creatures usually hunt others that are opposited from themselves. The relationship between cat and mouse is the apotheosis ot this idea, a classic case of one preying on the other where the two are looked upon as complete opposites. In Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" the whalers are hunting down the white whale. So according to my statement above this should make the crew members of the "Pequod" the absolute negation of Moby Dick. At first glance, maybe it seems this way, but in actuality the two are very similar. From the moment the crew members choose to embark on their voyage they become more like creatures of the sea than land dwellers. As the story evolves, the reader begins to uncover more and more similarities between the creatures on board the vessel, and those of the ocean. On top of this, as the characters progress and become more similar to their fellow ocean dwellers, they begin to actually show character traits similar to tha t of Moby Dick himself.    Before affiliating the crew aboard the ship with Moby Dick, there are some comparisons to be made between them and ocean inhabitants in general. While living in the ocean environment the men begin to acquire the same survival techniques as some of the organisms in the ocean. The manner in which the whalers go about slaughtering the whales is much like the way that the sharks react to the whale carcass being held stagnate in the water. "....because such incalculable hosts of sharks gather round the moored carcass, that were he left so for six hours, say, on a stretch, little more that the skeleton would be visible by mornong"(Melville 328). These sharks are savages in the face of sustenance. In most cases the sheer size of the whale prohibits it from being captured and consumed by the sharks. The only chance that they have at these huge beasts is when they are slung along side the whaling ships. Once they have their opening to this plethora of meat it becomes a barbaric feeding frenzy . These actions of the sharks reflect the actions of the whalers when taking part in the slaying of a whale. Employee Representation Essay

The rise of capitalism in industrialized societies ad increase in case of exploitation of employees led to the rise of trade unions.   The trade unions were formed for the purpose of representing employees through preventing exploitation by their employers.   The increased cases of exploitation in terms of wage and other issues that affected employees in organisation, industries and companies led to the formation of trade unions.    The trade unions aim was to improve employees pay and other employment conditions through representing the employees in a collectively bargaining.   The formation of trade unions was initially objected by employers who felt they had a right to exploit the poor since they owned factors of production.  Ã‚   In today’s society most employers who understand the role of trade union appreciate the efforts made by trade unions.  Ã‚   A group of employees may join together to form a trade union and they may seek recognition from their employer (Blyton and Turnbull, 61). Collective bargaining involves the process by which the employer and trade unions discuss and agree on the employment terms and conditions.   The collective bargaining does not normally establish legal relations between the employee and employer. However, the agreement areas which relate to terms and conditions of employment become basis of employment contract.   The employer and employee can then agree on the employment terms as agreed between the employee and trade unions although it’s subject to any changes made between the employee and the employer.   Collective bargaining takes place in firms of all sides.   Good employer-employee relationships contribute to a healthy employer-trade union relationship. The effectiveness if trade unions can only be measured through the outcomes of intervention in employer-employee relationship.   Some trade unions have been known to be dormant and reap money out of employees yet no change is noticed in employees conditions under which they work.   Few trade unions have colluded with employers and oppressed employees after which the employers have supported to the collapse of the trade unions due to breach of contract. A trade union is an independent   body which been formed by individuals who volunteer to form an association whose main goal is to represent and protect the employment, service-related, professional, economic and social rights and interests of the employees.   Employees regards to anyone employed despite the nature of work. The trade unions achieve their set goals though dialogue with employees, association of employees, local government and the government in which trade union exist.   The dialogue is based on consultancy and collective bargaining on issues that are of interest to employees.   All employees are at liberty to join or not to join any â€Å"trade union except members of National Defence Force, National Intelligence Agency and South African secret service (Edwards, 36). Extent to which employee representation through trade unions is effective depends on the nature of employment and size of business or organisation in which the employee is working in.   In small organisations the trade unions have a small scope of employee representation because most dialogue is done directly between the employer and employee.   In such small firms, the trade union efficiency in employee representation can be derived from their ability to negotiate for good pays and payment systems, hours of work, holiday, sick pay and pensions. Trade unions are regulated by labour Relations act. The labour Relations Act applies to all employers, workers, trade unions and employers’ organisations.   However the act does not apply to member of National Defence Force, National Intelligence Agency or South African Secret Service. Trade unions in large firms and organisations enhance the relationship between the employer and employee.   This is because the employees have their chosen representatives who present employee grievances to the trade union.   In large firms and organisations all aspects that concern the employment contract are made known to the trade union for the trade union to be effective. Employees who represent collective needs of employees to employer may face hostility from employers.   In most cases, the employees who stand out to fight for the collective rights of employees have lost their jobs and this has created sense of insecurity among employee leaders. This usually happens when the imposed changes are objected by the employer.   This problem has made employee representation through sponsored trade unions to be effective because trade unions are independent association of volunteers.   Sponsored trade unions, due to absence of fear of the repercussions are able to negotiate with employers, association of employers effectively so the employees’ interests are addressed (William and Adam Smith, 88). Employee representation through sponsored trade unions has been especially effective while dealing with collective issues that concern all employees in a given state.   The trade unions are mostly made up of radical individuals who are patriotic and committed to the overall objective of addressing employees’ interests which involve minimum wage of civil servants depending on the standard of living and economic growth or the country. Trade unions have been effective in addressing issues that concern mode of payment for employees to avoid such cases like delayed salaries and wages.   This has led to improved social welfare of the employees.   Trade unions have been known to intervene in cases where organisations and firms have failed to pay their employees in time.    Also, trade unions have intervened in cases where the employees are exploited through low wages.   The employees demand increment of salaries through trade unions.   The trade unions then hold meetings with the employer or association of employers to agree on the fair salary.   The intervention by trade unions had led to great improvement in the labour market and this can be seen through reduced strikes in most countries. In the past, there were few laws that governed issues elated to sick leaves, maternity leaves and general leaves.   The trade unions have been known to contribute greatly to the occupational law through identification of areas where unfair dismissal is applied. Most employees have suffered unfair dismissal from temporary contacts or permanent contract due to inevitable cases like when absenteeism occurs due to sickness and/or maternity leaves.   In small firms, employees have been known to suffer the ill-treatment silently but the presence of trade unions has shown a lot of improvement in the labour industry.   The trade union representative in such a case is allowed by the labour Relations Act to help and present workers in governance and disciplinary hearing when the employees agree (Blyton and Turnbull, 565). Increase in payment demands by employment has in most cases led to termination of employment of the pioneers of the idea.   This has fear among employees who want to maintain their employment.   However, the productivity of laborers decline because of the dissatisfaction with their salaries.   Trade unions therefore hold discussions with employers and they monitor the employer’s compliance with the labour relations Act which involves any law regulating terms and conditions of employment and whether they have honored any agreement that had been made between employer and employee. Employees cannot be able to monitor employer compliance with law due to fear of losing the employment hence employee representation through sponsored trade union ensure adherence by employer to any agreement that is passed concerning employee’s interest.   Effectiveness is achieved by ensuring employers comply and by reporting any failure by the employer to comply with the law or any made agreement to association of employers or any responsible authority or agency.   Employers are likely to act fast on the agreement when they are under the pressure of trade unions other than when employees are pushing. Employees have a tendency to act on the agreement made between employer and employees because employer acknowledge that trade unions are independent association that are protected and empowered by labour relations act. In countries where racism have been know to have great effect on employment environment especially issues regarding promotion and unfair treatment, trade unions have been known to intervene to ensure fair treat of all individual/employees in countries like US where racist is said to exist in most organisations, employees forward their grievances to trade unions because if they complain or demand justice, the employer may deny them their right or may terminate their contracts or employment. Employees therefore though the trade unions present their grievances to civil command and their discrimination issue is addressed. Employee representation through sponsored trade unions ensures that employers conform to anti-discrimination law; employees with different races, religion age and marital status are treated equally due to follow-up by trade union representative. There have been incidences where the working conditions pose a health hazard to the employees yet the remuneration given cannot cover the extent of risks the employees are exposed.   When individual employees complain of their dissatisfaction with the salary based on the risks the employees are exposed to, the employees may be terminated or may be pressurized to quit the job by the employer on the argument that there is plenty supply of labour.   The trade unions therefore intervene so that the employees are paid in accordance to the risks they are exposed to. Excess supply of labour had led to many employers’ taking advantage of the situation by paying the employees less wage as compared to the amount of work that they do.   Some employees may not even complain of their exploitation by the employer because they fear loosing their long awaited job.   In capitalistic societies, where the few are the owners of factors of production, there is high exploitation of the poor people who supply labour to the industries. The merchant in capitalistic societies pay constant wage which does not account for all the labour hours.   The poor work for more hours.   Trade unions in such situation have been known to be agents of social changes which may be radical.   The trade unions have contributed to the seizure of the habit by ensuring that employees are paid their worth irrespective of their positions.   Trade unions are accredited for presenting the grievances of the poor (Beardwell, 225). In organisation/firms where the employees are many, it becomes very hard to address the individual needs.   Trade unions therefore collect the individual needs and try to apply them to the whole group.   This is especially the case with civil servants who work in various regions of the state in different departments and therefore have different need. The trade unions address those needs by holding discussions with government officials and they may challenge the states labour law if they are to the disadvantage of employees.   The trade union in most countries have been known to cause remarkable changes in labour laws for example, setting the minimum wage that should be earned by any employee depending on the nature of job and category of job. Trade unions are effective more than individual employees especially in presenting individual rights since trade unions enjoy some favour from the industrial relations Bill in 2003.   The trade unions are able to negotiate for the members interests as association of employers. Trade unions contribute to the formation of government policies concerning resource allocations and other matters that concern employees.   Some trade union representatives are incorporated in the government policy making through writing proposals which the government use as guide in making the policies. The proposals consider the government resources and the human resource (employees) needs and make suggestions on how the government can integrate both parties’ demands given the scarce resources.   Though, even with the support from government through industrial relations Bill 2003, trade unions are faced with challenge of many cases taking long term to be completed.   There have been many pending cases in courts as noted in the Irish government (Beardwell, 225). Trade unions have been delegated many duties that concern employee interests.   However, trade union cannot represent the employees in full capacity to their employers.   This has led to formation of non-union groups in the industries, organisations or firms. These non-union groups are mainly composed of employees who seek to represent the grievances to the employers with an aim of consensus through dialogue.   The formation of non-union groups has been triggered by the disillusionments that have been incurred by many trade unions in Irish government.   The disillusionment is highly attributed by the long period of time that many industrial cases take in labour court.   In fact, the data from Irish government indicate that few races which may be less than ten cases have actually reached the determination stage (William and Adam Smith, 89). Most companies argue that there is scarcity of human resource in their firm and hence thus most times the labour is misused through denial of holiday leave some employees develop health complications due to overworking or work pressure.   Some employees when they report the need to be given lighter job are threatened or are denied the right because of their race, ethnicity or religion.   The employees can then sue the concerned organisation through the sponsored trade union for violation of occupational safety and health act.   This has brought positive results because employees have complied with the occupational safety and health act due to the power that trade union are accorded by the industrial relation Act. Most trade unions have been know to contribute greatly in the health and safety training of employees and employers and have had positive impact on the effectiveness f trade union.   In cases where the trade unions gain favour from employer or association of employers, through recognition, the trade union plans and strategies to address the issues that concern employees become very effective (Blyton,66). Most employers are reluctant to change the working conditions of their employees because they incur extra cost on the firm or organisation.   The employers in such cases do not pay attention to employee suggestions or grievances but intervention of trade unions enhance the situation because most employees are aware of the privileges that have been accorded trade unions by the industrial relations Act, 2003 (Edwards, 35). When an employer wants to introduce a new technology that is likely to affect the employees, the employees object the introduction through trade unions.   Most employers innovate ways in which to reduce operational costs without putting employees needs into consideration.   In most cases, the adoption of the technology requires lay off of some employees and this would have an effect on the employees’ welfare. The trade union takes up the matter and negotiates with the employer on the impact of the introduction on the economy.   Most employers have been known to balance their interests with the employees due to the effective presentation by trade unions. Strikes are common in many nations.   Strikes usually occur when the employees fail to act as per their agreement or sometimes strikes are done to demonstrate dissatisfaction with the employers’ services or treatment. Most employers have been noted to act very aggressively.   Some employees according ton various studies done in UK have been seen to fire few employees instead and this brought a lot of criticism from employees and public.   Trade unions become very crucial in such cases because they present the employees in court and sue for damages caused by the unfair dismissal of the employees.   In most cases, when the cases in court are taken up by trade unions, they are acted upon very fast other than individual employees because of the recognition of trade unions. Employees are meant to relate with their employers well.   The relationship between employer and employee should portray transparency and commitment by both parties towards the contract that they have entered into.   Good employee-employer relationship enhances the achievement of the organisations or firm’s goal.   When there is dialogue between employer and employee, the need for trade unions becomes insignificant. However, very few employers honour the terms and conditions of the contract according to occupational safety and health and yet they expect the employees to comply with the terms and conditions of the employment.   The conflict of interest between the two parties necessitates the need for an independent association trade union.   Other wise, compliance by both parties would produce positive results and would save time and cost on the firm or organisation incurred in legal proceedings. Most employees in UK have joined trade unions as shown by the government data.   The employees have joined the trade unions because of their recognition for the need of an arbitrator between then and the employees.   The employees can only be presented if they are members of trade union.   The membership is voluntary for all except members of defense. When most employees retire, there is tendency by the employers to fail to pay pensions.   Trade unions have noted to be effective in claiming the employees’ rights especially pension funds.   Most domestic jobs however do not have pension schemes for example the house keeping, shopkeeper attendant. This has limited the performance of trade unions because however much they want to assist the employees, the nature of job cannot favour the intervention of trade unions. Some employees have been known to abuse the trade unions power by failing to report of their absence from job and this limited the effectiveness of trade unions in presenting the employees.   Negligence by employees through for example, deliberately destroying a company’s wealth or resources like lighting a cigarette in a petrol station by an employee, cannot be protected.   The employers sometimes use the trade unions as puppet to push for their needs and interests.   This has led to ineffectiveness of many trade unions which have been disregarded by employers (Blyton, 33). The trade unions can liaise with the labour departments in many states.   The relationship between trade unions and labour departments has produced good fruits in many countries because it has increased recognition and the effectiveness of the unions.   The trade unions are known to gain favour from most governments hence the grievances of employees are addressed fast when they are represented through a trade union. The employee presentation through sponsored trade union can only be effective up to the point where the court ruling has been done.   Beyond court ruling the employee presentation through trade union then becomes insignificant.   The employees have to adhere to the court ruling whether it favours the employer or employee.   Most employees have face disillusionment after the trade unions efforts are undermined by the industrial court (Edwards, 21). Higher presentation of employees in the trade unions has contributed to higher returns or positive results.   This has been the inspiration by many employees to join trade unions.   The industrial Relation Act in Irish government which was amended in 2003 has been seen to favour trade unions.   However, the trade unions have realized their ineffectiveness due to the legislative system where many cases remain in court for so long.   The trade unions in Irish government were accorded right to bargain though labour courts and labour Relations Commission were given greater powers to resolve recognition and representation disputes (Beardwell, 213). Many countries are known to have similar legislative systems which give industrial Courts right to deal with employees’ disputes.   In countries, industrial courts recognize trade unions more than individual employees.   This had led to many employees been pressurized by the system to join trade union so that the disputes that have in industrial courts may be dealt with fast especially with intervention of trade unions. When trade unions are pushing for the employees’ interests, the employees feel at liberty to express them because they will not suffer victimization as would be the case if they pursued the interests or grievances as individual employees.   The labour relations commissions however, has reported cases of disillusionment the failure of the parties in disputes to meet timescale and deadlines in many instance.   The labour relations commission data in Irish government indicate that the failures are in most cases caused by employers but trade unions are not exempted too. In Europe, most employees even those working in small firms have enrolled into trade unions and this enhanced the services delivered to them.   However, the effort of trade unions has been undermined by the size and nature of employment. Before applying the system model to Drexler’s, first we will discuss a little bit about the system theory itself. The organization itself is an element of a larger system, the environment. Within time, every organization takes, processes and returns resources to the environment. The decisive factor of organizational effectiveness is whether the organization survives in the environment.In simpler meaning, systems theory is when an organization takes resources (inputs) from the larger system (the environment), processes the resources and returns them in a changed form (output). Input – Mrs. Scott talks to her customers, new and old, about what they are looking for within the restaurant. Process – Mrs. Scott gathers and analyzes the customers’ suggestions. Output – Mrs. Scott implements her action plan and the en vironment (customers) receive the service they suggested. This process is basically a revolving system to improve customer service and business activity. Due to Mrs.Scott’s actions, she has closed down the restaurant and upgrade to a bigger building to accommodate her new and regular customers. Managers need to possess two key ingredients: authenticity and social intelligence Mrs. Scott possess both of these assets because she makes sure that Drexler’s menu is the same with the same ingredients, she makes sure that the restaurant is original in its deliverance. She also knows that to be successful she needs her customers’ input to keep them coming back for more. There are 5 dimensions of social intelligence: Â   empathy, presence, situational radar, clarity and authenticity which Mrs. Scott all possesses.
