Walter Mosley’s writing in â€Å"Little Scarlet† reflects a time when racial tension was strong, discrimination present and prejudice led to violence. The black citizens of South Los Angeles retaliated via the Watt’s Riots in 1965, as a result of countless years of being made to feel as though they had no voice. In my paper I will be exploring the connection between the historical oppressions that led up to the events and how todays California is impacted. The 1920s historically was a period of struggle for the African-American community. Blacks were still oppressed and encountered inequality to whites, even though, slavery had been abolished. Nevertheless, progress towards racial equality was beginning. The Harlem Renaissance, first genuine sense of African-American culture, was starting to form through jazz, dance, literature and art. A bold movement led by W.E.B. Dubois focused on educating blacks to generate equality (1); strong movements were beginning in order to promote the black race. The 1920s, the Great Migration, a large population of African- Americans relocated to the Northern and Midwestern cities to pursue job opportunities in the manufacturing industries, while looking to establish greater social and educational opportunities, in addition to escape racial bigotry, violence, Jim Crow Laws and segregation in the Southern states.
